Nikki Skies is an accomplished poet, award winning playwright, actor and author living in Atlanta, GA. She is best known for her fiery poet in venues across the performances as a featured country opening for the likes of Sonia Sanchez, Gloria Steinem and the late Amiri Baraka. Skies was recently cast as a co-star for John Singleton’s new television drama, “Rebel” on BET. She also writes the poetry for the series and for BET’s digital series, “Rebel Yell.”

Skies has been featured nationally on BET’s spoken word show, Lyric Café and was the narrator for The Lucille Bluford Story on PBS Television. In theatre, Skies’ one woman show in which she portrays the late Afeni Shakur, mother of Tupac Shakur, was commissioned as a fundraising event for the historical colleges of Morehouse and Spelman. Her latest play, Hope’s Return, debuted at the esteemed National Black Theatre Festival as a part of the New Works Reader’s Theatre among a selective 40 other playwrights.

As a speaker, she has traveled across the country to participate in panel discussions, facilitate workshops, and act as a keynote speaker on varied topics.

Often, her discussions are about, but not limited to, the absence of feminine art in curriculum and community, beauty standards and race relations between African American and Caucasian women and the feminine contribution to the Black Arts Movement.

A firm believer in the power of education, the Grambling State University alumna(Theatre/Acting), who also studied for her Masters at Howard University(Film/Screenplay Writing), uses her art as a teaching tool to encourage students to take an interest in literacy. Skies was chosen as a Dana Arts Fellow and integrated art with lesson planning in rural Alabama elementary schools. Her poem, One Day White Woman, has been used as curriculum in the Oakland’s Women Prison System, Orange County middle schools in California, and for the multicultural/diversity lyceum programming at San Diego State University.

She is the author of a collection of short stories entitled, Mississippi Window Cracks and two books of poetry and prose, Pocket Honey, Wind & Hips and yardwork. Skies dramatic debut fiction novel, The Town Dance, tackles the topic of same gender sexual assault. Skies is also the creator and editor for She Chronicles, an annual celebratory collection of literary works by and about women and a comedic e-book, Grace in Retail.
